Collaboration on Series of Webinars on the Uses of Bamboo in Saint Lucia!

While many of us have real anxieties due to the global pandemic of the Corona virus, there are many others still, who use the saying “never let a good crisis go to waste” as their guiding light. And so, we have seen in the past few months many Saint Lucians seizing the opportunity to start small businesses or explore opportunities presented by the pandemic.

The areas of agriculture, food security and sustainable plant use have also been on the front burner and next week two entities will be collaborating to present the possibilities via the use of one plant in particular.

On Wednesday August 12, 2020, Global Enterprises Management Solutions LLC will collaborate with International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation INBAR for the first in what is expected to be a series of webinars on Bamboo which happens to be the national plant of Saint Lucia.

Wednesday’s webinar will focus on the topic “an introduction to Bamboo” and will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

These webinars are geared towards positioning bamboo as a valuable local commodity which could reduce unemployment amongst youth and even create opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Bamboo can be used in the production of handicraft and furniture as well as for construction and environmental applications such as soil regeneration, water sources protection, soil erosion prevention, bioremediation, ecosystem services, carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation, among others.

Bamboo and rattan can be important nature-based solutions to a number of pressing global challenges, for poverty alleviation, green trade, climate change mitigation and adaptation, resilient construction and environmental protection.

Bamboo and rattan grow locally to some of the world’s poorest communities in the tropics and subtropics, providing a vast range of sustainable products, livelihood options and ecosystem services. If we can harness the potential of bamboo and rattan, the Global South will be closer to achieving its ambitious development, climate and environmental aims, including the Sustainable Development Goals, green growth, REDD+ targets, the Paris Agreement commitments, and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
