Terrifying moment bamboo bridge washes away while schoolchildren are crossing it in India

  • Wooden bridge connects two ends of Jagiroad village in Assam, eastern India
  • Monsoon rains have caused rivers in the region to swell to dangerous levels
  • Video shows bridge being washed away while parents cross it with children

This is the terrifying moment a bamboo bridge almost washed away while children were crossing it in a village in India.

Video shows women, schoolchildren and young men navigating the rickety structure in Jagiroad village, Assam province, as a swollen river flows under it.

Some of those crossing can be seen stopping in the middle to dip their hands in the water before the bridge begins to twist and bend.

Moments later the centre of the bridge gives way entirely, dipping under the water as it is carried away by the powerful current.

Around 10 men and boys are sent running for the safety of the shore, and while most are able to make it, two are left clinging on for dear life.

One end of the bridge then detaches from the opposite bank, causing the remaining part to drift downstream.

As the footage ends the two men can be seen stranded out in the strong current as others try to help them back to shore.

While most people manage to make it to the safety of the bank, two young men are left clinging on for dear life in the middle of the torrent

Luckily, they were rescued but the two ends of the village remain cut off since the collapse leaving people on the opposite sides stuck.

Assam is being lashed with heavy rain during its monsoon season, with as many as 170 villages and 55,000 people affected in the one state.

Land erosion has also created problems in many areas and several tributaries of the Brahmaputra- country's longest river - are flowing above the danger mark leaving most parts villages in the valley submerged.
