State Roundup

Winfield

• John Wittrig and his family just made Iowa history. They’ve created the state’s first agricultural conservation easement permanently protecting 130 acres of their farm for sustainable food production, something only the newest land trust in Iowa offers. Wittrig and his wife launched an organic chestnut orchard in the 1990s. He established the easement to protect the farmland near Crawfordsville from soil erosion and to open opportunities for farmers who want to practice a similar sort of sustainable agriculture. — Winfield Beacon/Wayland News

Wapello

• Wapello was recently named a recipient of a Visioning Grant and was the only Hometown Pride community this year, from all the counties participating statewide in the program, to receive a Community Visioning Grant from Trees Forever/Iowa DOT/ISU. This highly competitive grant provides $80,000 worth of inkind design and engineering services to the community. — Wapello Republican

West Liberty

• Brad Wilkening, an Iowa educator for more than 40 years, came to the West Liberty Public Library on Nov. 5, to offer his presentation, “Lessons of the Holocaust.” He has made it his personal mission to educate people on the consequences of allowing evil to exist within the world. Wilkening uses the Holocaust as an example of how quickly things can go from bad to worse if good people aren’t paying attention. He has interviewed many survivors, all of whom were children at the time, and he keeps their stories alive so we may learn from them. — West Liberty Index
