Members of a special commission created upon the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev to study the situation in the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex in connection with soil erosion in the area, intensification of landslides and rotting of human bones remaining in the open air, visited the area on June 9.

The mass graveyard was found on April 1, 2007 during excavation works. Later, workers of the Archeology and Ethnography Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences held extensive researches, which revealed that the graveyard relates to the genocide committed in 1918 by Armenians against civilians of Azerbaijan.

The Complex was opened on September 18, 2013 by the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Led by Ali Hasanov, the assistant to the President for Public and Political Issues, the commission members inspected the complex. After that, a meeting of the commission was held in the Guba Region Executive Authority, where the commission members made their proposals.

“The Genocide Memorial Complex in Guba was erected in honor of the tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis, who were brutally massacred during a genocide carried out by Armenian militaries in 1918,” Hasanov said after the meeting.

He noted that the historical documents, facts and expositions being displayed in the museum provides a vivid insight into the atrocities carried out against Azerbaijani civilians by Armenian nationalists and enables to convey these facts to the international community.

Hasanov voiced regret that human skeletons exposed to open air in the burial site of the Complex are beginning to rot, adding that the soil is also eroding and landslides get more intensified.

He noted that President Ilham Aliyev gave appropriate instructions to study the current situation and to prevent undesirable processes.

“Under the president’s instructions, Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration head Ramiz Mehdiyev signed an order on some issues regarding the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex. Under the order, a commission comprised of relevant bodies’ representatives and specialists was set up,” Hasanov said.

He added that the proposals made at the meeting in Guba will soon be studied, systematized and presented to the President.

The genocide of 1918 against the civilian population was conducted almost on the entire territory of Azerbaijan. More than 50,000 of Azerbaijani citizens became victims of Armenian fascism in a matter of five months.

Azerbaijanis were exposed to genocide in Baku, the Guba province, Shamakhi, Gusar, Erivan, Nakhchivan, Zangezur, Karabakh, Lankaran and many other Azerbaijani lands.
